Many Nigerians receive messages on WhatsApp or Telegram promising high‑paying remote work. The sender often asks for an “activation fee” or “registration fee” before you can start. These requests are a common scam pattern. Learning to pause, verify, and protect your money can stop you from losing naira to fraudsters.
Step-by-step
- Save the message and the sender’s number or username without replying immediately.
- Search the company name, job title, and “scam” together on Google or Nairaland to see if others have reported it.
- Check if the company has a verifiable website, physical address, and a corporate email domain (not @gmail.com or @yahoo.com).
- Ask for a video interview or a formal offer letter on company letterhead before sending any money.
- Contact the company through official channels (website contact form, listed phone number) to confirm the vacancy.
- Never pay via Opay, Palmpay, bank transfer, or crypto to a personal account for a job activation.
- Report suspicious contacts to WhatsApp’s “Report” feature, Telegram’s “Report Spam”, and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) portal.
