Many Nigerians see WhatsApp broadcasts or Facebook ads promising ₦15,000–₦50,000 weekly for "testing apps on your phone." The catch: they ask you to pay ₦2,000–₦10,000 first for a "course," "verification badge," or "premium access." Real microtask platforms never charge workers to join. This guide shows how to tell legitimate app testing from fee-based scams so you keep your money and data safe.
Step-by-step
- Check the platform domain and reputation. Legitimate sites like UserTesting, uTest, Testbirds, and TryMyUI have clear .com domains, verified reviews on Trustpilot or G2, and public contact information. Scams often use freshly registered .xyz, .top, or .ng domains with no history.
- Verify the signup flow. Real platforms ask for your email, device details, and a short practice test. They never redirect you to a WhatsApp group, Telegram channel, or Opay payment link before you qualify.
- Look for upfront payment demands. Any request for "registration fee," "training kit," "certification," or "BVN verification fee" is a red flag. Legitimate companies pay you, not the other way around.
- Test the support channel. Send a question to the platform's official email or live chat. Scammers either ignore you or reply from a personal Gmail/Whatsapp number. Real support uses a company domain (support@usertesting.com, for example).
- Read the payout terms. Genuine sites state clear minimums (e.g., $10 via PayPal or Payoneer) and timelines (7–14 days). Scams promise daily naira payouts to Opay or Palmpay but never release funds.
- Search for independent reviews. Type the platform name plus "scam," "review," or "payment proof" into Google or Nairaland. If the only results are the platform's own posts or referral links, walk away.
- Protect your BVN and bank details. No app testing job needs your BVN, ATM PIN, or OTP. Sharing those gives scammers full access to your accounts.
- Start with zero-cost platforms. Create accounts on UserTesting, Userlytics, or Intellizoom. Complete the free qualifying test. If you pass, you earn without spending a kobo.
